The Cobbler and the Devil

The folktale about the outwitted devil is common in many countries and the great Croatian 19th-century author, August Šenoa, rewrote is as a tale in verse about a Cobbler who cannot feed his children even though he works day and night so one day he calls for help, even if it comes from the Old Nick himself. If an honest, old cobbler cannot support his family through his trade, is that not a terrible injustice? Doesn’t a man have the right to stand up against it? This play encourages us to ask ourselves who are today’s cobblers and who are devils.
